The much-awaited 6th edition of the Hirakud Eco Retreat is all set to welcome tourists starting November 15. Promising an immersive blend of eco-friendly luxury and natural grandeur, this year’s event brings a major upgrade—the number of luxury cottages has been doubled from 25 to 50 to accommodate the growing influx of domestic and international tourists.
Organized by Odisha Tourism to boost the regional economy and showcase the state’s natural beauty, the retreat will be held in the Balbaspur area near the Hirakud Left Dyke. The glamorous camping event will run for 90 days, concluding on February 13, though authorities indicate a possibility of a one-month extension.
Better Connectivity and New Accommodation Options
The retreat site boasts excellent connectivity, located just 12 km from Ainthapali, 6 km from the Biju Expressway tollgate junction, and a mere 1 km from the Jamadarpali airstrip.
While last year’s event featured exclusively premium cottages, this edition introduces a new tier of ‘Deluxe’ cottages. According to Assistant Director of Tourism Rabindra Kumar Dalei, these new Deluxe cottages will be more budget-friendly than the Premium ones, making the 5-star glamping experience accessible to a wider audience. Tourists can book their stays online through the official Odisha Tourism website.
Hirakud is one of seven picturesque locations across the state hosting the Eco Retreat this year, alongside Konark, Satkosia, Daringbadi, Bhitarkanika, Putsil, and Pati Sonapur.
Activities and Sightseeing
The Eco Retreat promises a vibrant itinerary for its guests. The campsite will feature a multi-cuisine restaurant, a bar, and evening cultural programs including music and dance. Adventure enthusiasts can indulge in water sports, cycling, rifle shooting, archery, badminton, volleyball, and morning yoga sessions.
For those looking to explore the region, packaged tours are available to iconic local attractions, including the Hirakud Ropeway, Debrigarh Wildlife Sanctuary, Samaleswari Temple, Ghanteswari Temple, and the famous Huma Leaning Temple.
Long-Term Vision for Tourism
Highlighting the government’s commitment to boosting local tourism, Sambalpur Collector Siddheshwar Baliram Bondar announced that the Tourism Department has approved a 5-year continuation for the Hirakud Eco Retreat. Furthermore, steps are being taken to establish permanent infrastructure at the site. Land will be provided through the Odisha Tourism Development Corporation (OTDC) to facilitate permanent constructions in accordance with the state government’s tourism policy.
