Jamia Millia Islamia has agreed to hold Students’ Union elections by the last week of August 2027, marking a significant step towards restoring student representation on campus after a long gap.
The university administration announced that the constitution for the Students’ Union will be drafted, approved, and implemented by May 15, 2027. Elections are expected to be conducted within six weeks of the commencement of the academic session scheduled for July 16, 2027.
The decision comes in response to sustained student protests and a hunger strike demanding the revival of democratic student representation at the university. Students had sought a clear roadmap for elections, the restoration of the Students’ Union, and the withdrawal of disciplinary actions linked to the agitation.
Jamia has not conducted Students’ Union elections since 2006, making the latest announcement a landmark development for the institution. The absence of an elected student body had remained a major concern among students for nearly two decades.
Following assurances from the university administration and the announcement of a definite timeline for both the constitution and elections, student protesters decided to call off their hunger strike.
The move is expected to ease tensions on campus and pave the way for the return of an elected student representative body at one of the country’s prominent central universities.
