At least 46 people have lost their lives following a high-speed train collision in Spain’s Toledo province on Wednesday morning, October 28, 2026, according to local media reports.

The tragic accident occurred near the town of Urda when two high-speed trains traveling in the same direction collided. According to the Associated Press and Spanish media outlet ABC, one train struck the rear of the other, causing two carriages to derail from the tracks.

Emergency Response and Rail Disruption

Spain’s national rail infrastructure operator, Adif, immediately announced the total suspension of services on the vital Madrid-Andalusia high-speed rail line.

”Traffic on the Madrid-Andalusia high-speed rail line has been suspended following a rear-end collision between two trains,” Adif stated in a post on X.

Local authorities launched a massive rescue operation. The Madrid City Council deployed approximately 100 emergency personnel, including seven fire service vehicles, 16 ambulances, and specialized rescue teams. Additionally, crisis psychologists from SAMUR-PC were dispatched to Atocha station in Madrid to provide psychological support to affected families and passengers.

Local Leaders on the Scene

Manuel Galán, mayor of nearby Urda, told Spanish state broadcaster TVE that civil protection authorities requested local facilities, including a sports pavilion, to be prepared to shelter stranded passengers.

Jesús Pérez, mayor of the neighboring village of Los Yébenes, confirmed that the crash appeared severe. Meanwhile, Castilla-La Mancha regional president Emiliano García-Page announced via social media that he was personally heading to the crash site to oversee emergency coordination.

Rail operations remain suspended as rescue workers and investigators continue operations at the scene.
