Lorenzo Musetti produced a memorable turnaround in form to capture the Grand Prix Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes title in Lyon, defeating Taylor Fritz 6-3, 6-4 in Sunday’s final and ending a long wait for ATP Tour silverware.
The triumph marked Musetti’s first ATP Tour title since 2022 and his third career tour-level crown. The Italian also snapped a seven-match losing streak in ATP finals, making the victory even more significant in his comeback journey.
Musetti’s title run was far from straightforward. The 24-year-old faced elimination in the semifinals against fellow Italian Flavio Cobolli, where he saved four match points before battling through to reach the championship match. Reflecting on the week, Musetti described the tournament as a “rollercoaster.”
In the final, Musetti showcased composure and tactical brilliance against Fritz, who had not dropped a set throughout the tournament. The Italian maintained control from the baseline, breaking at key moments to secure a straight-sets victory and lift the trophy.
Following the win, Musetti credited his coaching team, medical staff and physiotherapist for helping him overcome injury setbacks and regain confidence on court. The title success also boosted him two places to No. 24 in the PIF ATP Live Rankings.
The victory improved Musetti’s head-to-head record against Fritz to 5-3 and made him the fourth Italian man to win an ATP Tour title in 2026, joining Jannik Sinner, Flavio Cobolli and Luciano Darderi.
For Musetti, Lyon could prove to be a turning point. After years of near misses and final-round heartbreaks, the Italian finally rediscovered the winning formula, turning a week of survival into a moment of triumph.
