India and the European Union (EU) are fast-tracking final procedures to sign their historic Free Trade Agreement (FTA) by mid-December 2026, coinciding with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s planned visit to Brussels while returning from the G20 summit in the United States.

Fast-Track Legal Approval and Signing Timelines

To ensure the timeline is met without delays, the European Commission (EC) has recommended a “fast-track procedure” to the Council of the European Union, as outlined by Trade Commissioner Maroš Šefčovič. Under this expedited mechanism, the legal review will proceed based on the original English text rather than waiting for translation into all 24 official EU languages—a process that would typically delay ratification by more than a year.

Diplomatic sources indicate both sides are aiming to sign the pact around December 17 or 18 in Brussels. Dubbed by negotiators as “the mother of all deals,” the agreement will create the world’s largest free trade zone, covering 25% of global Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and nearly a quarter of the world’s population.

Diplomatic Momentum and Economic Reach

Preparations for the signing are advancing rapidly across major diplomatic channels:

  • High-Level Bilateral Visits: Indian Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agrawal is visiting Brussels this week to resolve final technical procedures. His trip follows Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal’s recent diplomatic tour across Germany and the Netherlands to build market access momentum.
  • EU Foreign Affairs Delegation: A delegation from the EU Committee on Foreign Affairs, led by David McAllister, is scheduled to visit New Delhi from October 26–28 for official discussions under the current European Parliament mandate.

Bilateral trade in goods between India and the EU reached €118 billion in 2025, alongside €67 billion in services trade. Key Indian exports include machinery, chemicals, textiles, metals, and refined petroleum, while EU exports are led by industrial machinery, transport equipment, and advanced chemical products.

Once signed in December, the treaty will undergo ratification by the European Parliament before becoming fully operational in early 2027.
