In a sudden development following the Dussehra festive weekend, Canadian theatrical exhibitor York Cinemas announced a complete halt to all screenings of Rajinikanth’s latest action blockbuster, Jailer 2, effective Wednesday, October 21, 2026.
The decision comes despite the Nelson Dilipkumar directorial enjoying a stellar box office run, having grossed over ₹540 crore worldwide within its first six days of release.
Technical Dispute Halts Screenings in Canada
According to an official statement issued by York Cinemas on Instagram, the stoppage stems from technical and authorization disputes between North American distributors and the production house:
”Dear Valued Patrons, We regret to inform you that Jailer 2 will no longer be screening at York Cinemas effective Wednesday, October 21, 2026. This decision is due to circumstances beyond the control of York Cinemas.”
Key Delivery Message (KDM) Withheld
The exhibitor clarified that while they had fulfilled all financial and contractual commitments, necessary Key Delivery Messages (KDMs)—the security digital keys required to play encrypted digital cinema packages—were not authorized or delivered by North American distributors Shloka Entertainments and Prathyangira Cinemas following required approvals from producer Sun Pictures.
Without active KDMs, the theater chain is technically unable to project the film. York Cinemas apologized to moviegoers, stating that efforts to resolve the impasse were unsuccessful.
Phenomenal Box Office Run
Despite the setback in Canada, Jailer 2 continues its record-breaking spree across global markets:
- Global Collections: The film grossed ₹542.45 crore worldwide by Dussehra, comprising ₹338.45 crore in domestic gross and ₹204 crore in overseas collections.
- Milestones: It stands as the third-highest-grossing Indian film of 2026 and the fastest Tamil film to cross the ₹500 crore benchmark this year.
- Star-Studded Ensembles: Sequelled to the 2023 hit, Jailer 2 sees Rajinikanth return as Tiger Muthuvel Pandian, alongside Ramya Krishnan, SJ Suryah, Vidya Balan, Mithun Chakraborty, and star cameos from Mohanlal, Shiva Rajkumar, Jackie Shroff, Hrithik Roshan, and Vijay Sethupathi.
Neither Sun Pictures nor the North American distributors have officially responded to the screening suspension in Canada yet.
