The official X account of the Bhubaneswar-Kataka Commissionerate Police was compromised on Monday, with unauthorised posts promoting a cryptocurrency airdrop appearing on the handle before the account was suspended.
The X account had been inaccessible or under unauthorised control for approximately 16 hours.
A post from the official handle @cpbbsrctc advertising the “XAMAN Airdrop” linked to XRP, directing users to claim allocations via a wallet connection. The post carried a platform notice indicating it originated from a suspended account.
Police authorities have informed the platform through a formal letter addressed to the Commissioner of Police. Officials are treating the incident as a cybersecurity breach and are working to regain full control of the account and prevent further misuse.
The Commissionerate Police, headed by Commissioner of Police Dr S. Dev Datta Singh, routinely uses its social media channels to share public advisories, crime updates and community policing information. The appearance of crypto-related promotional content on an official law-enforcement handle has raised concerns about the security of government social media accounts.
Further details on the investigation or restoration of the account are awaited.
