A wave of massive protests over the rising cost of living and other grievances swept across Paris and multiple French cities on Saturday, resulting in widespread violence, looting, and arson.

Among the most devastating losses was the complete destruction of the historic Town Hall in Limoges, a landmark built in 1873 that had miraculously survived both World Wars.

Key Highlights of the Unrest

  • Destruction of Limoges Town Hall: Witnesses reported masked protesters setting a police car ablaze outside before smashing windows and storming the 19th-century building to start a fire. Regional officials confirmed the landmark was “largely lost,” calling it a major catastrophe for heritage.
  • Massive Turnout & Arrests: According to the interior ministry, roughly 550,000 people participated nationwide, while unions claimed up to 800,000. At least 1,200 arrests have been made following clashes where police deployed tear gas and water cannons.
  • Widespread Vandalism and Looting: Cities including Paris, Lyon, Marseille, Lille, Bordeaux, and Nice witnessed extensive damage. Protesters set tourist offices and vehicles on fire, forced their way into municipal buildings, and looted dozens of high-end stores, including an Apple store in Lille.
  • Origins of the Protests: Initially sparked by cost-of-living concerns and student demonstrations over educational conditions, the protests saw participation from revived factions like the “Yellow Vests” and ultra-left-wing agitators.

Political Repercussions and Reactions

  • French Leadership Response: President Emmanuel Macron condemned the vandalism and looting on X, vowing that those who attacked administrative offices and town halls would be strictly prosecuted and punished. Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu similarly denounced the “violence of extreme intensity.”
  • JD Vance’s Remarks: US Vice President JD Vance weighed in on the unrest on social media, criticizing Western immigration and assimilation policies and warning Americans to pay heed to the developments unfolding in France.
