There is a fresh roar of celebration in Odisha’s wildlife circles. The famous Nandankanan Zoological Park has expanded its feline family once again, welcoming a brand-new lion cub on Tuesday evening.
The newborn arrived in enclosure number 18, born to first-time mother lioness Shreya and father lion Harsh. However, because Shreya is a novice mother and did not immediately exhibit natural maternal care toward the newborn, quick-thinking zoo authorities intervened. To ensure the safety and well-being of the infant, the dedicated team promptly separated the cub from its mother and transferred it to the specialised animal nursery at the veterinary care centre.
Veterinary professionals are currently providing round-the-clock specialised attention. The newborn is being kept cosy under a warm lighting setup and is being bottle-fed by keepers to ensure proper nutrition and steady growth. Zoo officials report that the little cub is responding well to the care.
A Growing Pride
With this latest addition, the total lion population at Nandankanan Zoological Park has officially risen to 23. The impressive pride now consists of 13 male lions, nine lionesses, and the newborn cub.
Interestingly, the cub’s lineage holds a familiar history within the park. The parents, Harsh and Shreya, are themselves siblings. They were born on August 29, 2024, to proud parents Samrat (lion) and Bijli (lioness).
As the little cub grows stronger under the watchful eyes of the veterinary staff, wildlife enthusiasts and zoo authorities alike are celebrating this milestone in conservation and animal husbandry. Visitors hoping to catch a glimpse of the newest member will have to wait a little longer as the cub receives specialised nursery care, but its arrival marks another bright chapter for Nandankanan’s thriving wildlife family.
