The Raurkela Police have cracked a major house burglary case, detaining four individuals linked to a 4-member inter-locality looting gang.
The arrests follow a meticulous investigation into a high-profile theft at a residential quarter in Raurkela’s Saranagari area.
The Ganesh Puja Night Heist
The incident dates back to the night of September 22, when Santosh Kumar Sahu and his family left their quarters (Quarters No. B/206) in Saranagari to witness the Ganesh idol immersion procession. Capitalising on the empty house, miscreants broke open the locks and decamped with INR 1.5 lakh in cash and gold ornaments worth lakhs. Sahu subsequently lodged a formal written complaint at the Tangarpali Police Station.
The Trail of Stolen Gold
Police investigation revealed that three youths from Malgodam and one from Saranagari orchestrated the crime, utilising a car that has now been seized by authorities.
After ransacking the quarters, the stolen cash was spent on leisure, while the gold ornaments were handed over to local associates. The Saranagari youth routed the stolen jewellery through a pan shop owner at VSS Market in Chhend Colony. The pan shop owner then sold the gold ornaments worth INR 2.80 lakh to “Mandal Jewellers” located in Daily Market. In a crucial development to destroy evidence, the jeweller reportedly melted down the stolen ornaments.
Ongoing Crackdown
While police have successfully detained four suspects—including the jeweller—one key accused managed to evade capture and remains absconding. Law enforcement agencies are maintaining strict confidentiality around certain details to avoid hampering the ongoing investigation, with further arrests expected soon as the net closes in on the remaining fugitive.
