Odisha LPG leak fire

A Sunday morning routine descended into unimaginable tragedy in Arabala village under Odisha’s Jajpur district, after a suspected Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) pipe leak sparked a horrific domestic fire, claiming the life of a five-year-old girl and leaving three family members critically injured.

The tragic event occurred at around 6:30 AM on Sunday while 35-year-old Tilottama Malik was in the kitchen preparing breakfast for her family. According to preliminary reports, a gas pipe unexpectedly burst, instantaneously engulfing the immediate kitchen area in flames and catching the household off guard.

The roaring blaze trapped members of the family inside the house, causing severe burn injuries. Hearing the chaos and flames, neighbours rushed to the scene to assist with rescue efforts and alerted local emergency services.

The five-year-old victim, identified as Mamali Malik, was rushed alongside her injured family members to the nearby Dharmasala Community Health Centre (CHC). Tragically, attending doctors declared the young girl dead on arrival due to the severity of her burn injuries.

Mamali’s parents—Tilottama Malik and her husband, Abhiram Malik (40)—sustained extensive and critical burn injuries in the blaze. The girl’s uncle, Uttam Malik (50), was also hurt while trying to contend with the sudden inferno.

Given the life-threatening nature of their injuries, medical officers at the Dharmasala CHC provided urgent preliminary care before transferring Abhiram, Tilottama, and Uttam to the specialised burn unit at SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack for advanced emergency treatment.

Fire service personnel and a police contingent from the Kotpur outpost quickly secured the scene in Arabala village. Authorities have launched an official investigation to determine the exact cause of the leak and verify if safety protocols or faulty equipment contributed to the fatal pipe burst.
