The legal battle surrounding the upcoming film Kala Hiran: The Battle for Legal took a fresh procedural turn on Tuesday as the Delhi High Court sought a formal response from Bollywood superstar Salman Khan.
Justice Anup Jairam Bhambhani issued a notice to the actor following an application filed by the movie’s producer, Amit Jani, which requests a stay on Khan’s ongoing lawsuit seeking to restrain the film’s release.
During the proceedings, counsel representing the filmmakers argued that the core relief sought by Khan—namely, restraining the exhibition, release, and dissemination of the movie and its promotional assets—is substantially identical to disputes already active under an earlier, broader suit filed by the actor for the protection of his personality rights. The makers contended that continuing parallel proceedings on the same subject matter is unwarranted.
Previously, the High Court had ordered the removal of initial teasers and promotional content, noting that unauthorised commercial exploitation of the star’s persona or reputation is impermissible. Meanwhile, the film’s producers have maintained that the project is not a direct biopic and that public events remain a matter of public record.
The court has granted time for Khan’s legal team to file a formal reply as the legal tussle continues.
