A 15-year-old student lost his hand and part of his lower arm on Monday when a police dispersion grenade exploded during clashes outside a high school in the northern town of Lens.

The incident marks a severe escalation in nationwide high school (lycée) demonstrations that have disrupted education across the country since late September.

Regional Prefect François-Xavier Lauch confirmed that the teenager was hospitalized in Lille and is currently out of danger, though circumstances regarding whether the student picked up the sting-ball grenade or if it landed adjacent to him remain under investigation.

The student movement, which has affected adolescent pupils aged 15 to 18, stems from growing anger over underfunded educational infrastructure, frequent teacher absences, overcrowded classrooms, and long 10-hour school schedules.

Key developments surrounding the nationwide agitation include:

  • Mass Disruption: Over 500 of France’s 3,700 high schools were completely closed or partially blockaded by students using wheelie bins and makeshift barriers.
  • Casualties and Arrests: Government figures report that more than 215 students and 715 law enforcement personnel have been injured since the demonstrations began, with over 5,000 arrests—roughly 85 percent of them minors.
  • Union Support: Major French trade unions, including the CGT, have announced plans to join students on the frontlines to act as shields against alleged police force excesses.

While the French government has offered to open digital platforms and dialogue panels to address facility deficits, officials have simultaneously accused far-left political factions of manipulating teenage anger.

Student activist unions have rejected government compromises, calling for a “Act III” national day of strikes and street demonstrations.
