In a heartbreaking development, a 7-month-old female white tiger cub died suddenly at Nandankanan Zoological Park in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, on June 1, 2025.
The cub, born to white tigress Rupa and melanistic Royal Bengal tiger Krishna, was a cherished resident of enclosure number 21.
The young cub, part of Rupa’s third litter born on November 2, 2024, had shown signs of illness a few days prior, including weakness and difficulty in movement. Zoo authorities promptly separated it from its mother for medical treatment. After displaying signs of recovery, the cub was returned to the enclosure for public viewing. Tragically, its unexpected death on Sunday evening has left the zoo community and visitors in shock.
An official from Nandankanan stated that the cause of the cub’s death will be determined after a post-mortem examination scheduled for Monday, June 2, 2025. The loss has reduced the tiger population at the zoo to 27, marking a significant blow to conservation efforts and the park’s appeal as a haven for rare wildlife.
The birth of this white tiger cub, a result of the unique pairing of Rupa and Krishna, had been a moment of pride for Nandankanan, known for its efforts in breeding and conserving endangered species. The zoo now mourns the loss of this rare and beloved animal, with staff and visitors alike expressing grief over the sudden tragedy.
