The Forest Department in Malkangiri district of Odisha rescued 631 live turtles during a major crackdown on suspected wildlife trafficking along the border with Andhra Pradesh on Thursday. Seven individuals were arrested in connection with the case.
The operation was conducted by officials from the Motu Forest Range after receiving intelligence about illegal turtle trading activities in the region.
Raid Conducted at Motu Border
According to forest officials, the raid took place near the Motu border area wher two traders from Andhra Pradesh were allegedly attempting to sell turtles to five other traders.
Authorities intervened during the transaction and apprehended all seven suspects involved in the operation.
During the raid, officials also seized a four-wheeler, two motorcycles, and six mobile phones that were allegedly used in the smuggling activity.
Turtles Worth Several Lakhs Seized
Forest officials said the rescued turtles were being transported in 38 trays and had a combined weight of nearly two tonnes. The animals are believed to be worth several lakh rupees in the illegal wildlife trade market.
The turtles have been taken into the custody of the forest department for further care and protection.
Authorities suspect the accused were part of a cross-border wildlife trafficking network operating between Odisha and Andhra Pradesh.
Rising Concern Over Wildlife Smuggling
Officials noted that similar incidents have been reported recently in the region. On March 1, the Kalimela Forest Department rescued around 200 live turtles from a forest area near MV-62 village in Malkangiri district.
Repeated cases of turtle smuggling have raised concerns among authorities about ongoing wildlife trafficking activities in border areas despite increased surveillance and enforcement.
Further investigations are underway to identify additional individuals involved in the illegal wildlife trade network.
