The Odisha Excise Department intercepted a high-value drug smuggling attempt in Kataka, seizing 110 grams of brown sugar estimated to be worth around Rs 11 lakh.
One drug peddler was taken into custody during the operation.
The arrest took place near the busy Jagatpur Golei Chhak area. Acting on heightened surveillance, excise personnel spotted a man acting suspiciously while standing at the intersection. Upon detaining and searching him, officials recovered the contraband hidden in his possession.
The accused has been identified as Abhimanyu Nayak, a resident of the Nuapada locality in Kataka. Following the recovery of the illegal substance, Nayak was arrested and subsequently produced before the court, excise officials confirmed.
Surveillance Intensified Ahead of Festive Season
The seizure comes as part of a state-wide crackdown on illegal narcotics networks. With major festivals approaching, the Excise Department has significantly scaled up patrols, intelligence gathering, and sudden raids across key transit hubs and sensitive pockets in and around the city to prevent the influx and distribution of illegal drugs.
Reiterating its firm stance against drug trafficking, the department issued a strong warning to those involved in the illicit trade and appealed to the public—particularly youth—to stay away from the consumption and sale of narcotic substances. Officials emphasised that strict vigilance will continue throughout the festive period to ensure law and order.
