A 22-year-old man, Surjyakant Sethi, allegedly murdered his parents and sister late last night following a heated argument over his addiction to online gaming.
The gruesome crime took place in Jayabada village under Jagatsinghpur Sadar police station limits.
According to sources, Surjyakant attacked his father, Prashant Sethi, mother, Kanaklata, and sister, Rosaline, with a stone and a wooden club, bludgeoning them to death. After committing the murders, he informed his neighbors before fleeing the scene.
Family members revealed that Surjyakant had been mentally unstable and exhibited erratic behavior. His elder brother, Ramakanta Sethi, mentioned that Surjyakant frequently had heated discussions with family members and had been disappearing for hours without informing anyone. In the past few days, his behavior had rapidly deteriorated.
The addiction to online gaming reportedly played a significant role in the tragic incident. Surjyakant had frequent clashes with his parents over his excessive gaming habits, which further exacerbated his mental state.
Jagatsinghpur SP Bhavani Shankar Udgata visited the crime scene and reviewed the situation. The police recovered a blood-stained wooden club allegedly used in the act. The investigation is ongoing, with authorities probing all angles, including Surjyakant’s mental health.
