In a deeply disturbing incident at Burla’s Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (VIMSAR), a 29-year-old patient attempted suicide by jumping from the first-floor roof of the hospital building on Wednesday.
The youth, identified as Subir Saridar from Bhatigaon village under Bijepur police limits in Bargarh district, had earlier attempted suicide at home by slitting his throat with a sharp weapon on Tuesday night. He was initially admitted to Bargarh District Hospital and later shifted to VIMSAR early Wednesday morning due to the severity of his injuries.
After receiving emergency care in the Casualty Ward, Subir was transferred to the ENT Department for further treatment. Around 11:30 AM, while awaiting surgery outside the operation theatre, he reportedly managed to escape supervision and jumped from the first-floor roof in another attempt to end his life.
Hospital authorities, including VIMSAR Superintendent Dr. Lal Mohan Nayak, confirmed that the youth sustained injuries to his back but was promptly rescued and re-admitted to the Casualty Ward. “His condition is currently stable, and he is under close observation,” Dr. Nayak stated. He also mentioned that the patient had expressed signs of mental distress, and a psychiatric evaluation will follow once his physical condition improves.
Police have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding both suicide attempts. The incident has raised serious concerns about patient supervision and mental health support in government hospitals.
