A youth from Teghari village under Jaleswar police limits in Odisha attempted suicide after losing a substantial amount of money in online gaming.
The youth, identified as Sourajit Ray, reportedly lost over ₹5 lakh playing an online betting game, leading to severe financial distress and emotional turmoil.
Sourajit, a private tutor by profession, had become addicted to online gaming, hoping to win big and change his fortunes. However, repeated losses pushed him into depression. According to sources, he had previously attempted suicide due to similar financial setbacks.
On the morning of April 19, Sourajit, overwhelmed by anxiety, inflicted multiple injuries on his hands and neck using a knife. His family members rushed him to Jaleswar Hospital, but due to the severity of his condition, he was later shifted to Balasore District Headquarters Hospital for advanced treatment.
The incident has raised concerns about the growing menace of online gaming addiction, particularly among the youth. Mental health experts emphasise the need for awareness campaigns and stricter regulations to prevent such tragedies.
