World no. 1 Jannik Sinner, who won the Australian Open last month, has been suspended from February 9 to May 4 due to inadvertent contamination with the banned substance clostebol by his physiotherapist.
WADA accepted that Sinner did not intend to cheat and that the drug did not enhance his performance.
Despite this, athletes are responsible for their entourage’s negligence, resulting in a three-month suspension. Sinner will miss key tournaments in Indian Wells, Miami, and several clay tournaments leading up to the French Open. He can return to official training from April 13 and will compete in the Italian Open starting May 7.
Sinner had tested positive for a banned substance last year. After the independent tribunal’s decision in August 2024 to clear the player of wrongdoing, WADA appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) against the decision.
Jannik Sinner also reacted to the development and said that he has always accepted that he was responsible for the actions of his team and that he had accepted WADA’s decision to ban him for 3 months.
