A woman in Timna village under Bargaon police station limits was allegedly stripped naked, paraded through the streets, and brutally assaulted by her husband.
The assault followed a kangaroo court convened by villagers who accused the woman of having an extra-marital relationship with an unmarried youth from a nearby village.
Reports indicate that the youth had been staying at the woman’s house for four days before villagers caught the duo and held an informal hearing. Both reportedly confessed to the relationship. The villagers then informed the woman’s husband, who works in Bengaluru. Upon returning home on Wednesday, he allegedly carried out the public assault, forcing his wife to walk naked through the village.
A video of the incident went viral on social media, prompting outrage and calls for justice. Although no formal complaint was initially lodged, Sundargarh SP Amritpal Kaur, along with the Additional SP and police personnel, visited the village and detained 14 individuals for questioning in connection with the incident.
The case has raised serious concerns about vigilante justice, gender-based violence, and the role of social media in exposing such crimes. Authorities have assured that a thorough investigation is underway and legal action will be taken against all those involved.
