A shocking incident from Dabirighati village under Jayapatna block in Kalahandi district has once again exposed the hardships faced by people in Odisha’s remote regions.
Urmila Majhi, a pregnant woman from the village, went into labour late Sunday night. Her family immediately called for an ambulance, but due to the absence of a motorable road, the vehicle could not reach the village and waited nearly 10 km away at Chacharaguda.
With no other option, villagers placed Urmila on a tractor and began the journey toward Chacharaguda. Midway, she delivered a baby girl on the tractor itself. Both mother and child were later taken by ambulance to Maidalpur Medical Centre, and subsequently shifted to Nabarangpur District Headquarters Hospital due to blood deficiency and malaria complications.
Residents said Dabirighati, though officially part of Kalahandi, depends on Nabarangpur for healthcare. They demanded construction of proper roads and improved medical facilities in all inaccessible villages of the district. The incident has reignited debate over the lack of basic infrastructure in tribal and border areas.
