The fifth seed, Daniil Medvedev staged a remarkable comeback from a set and a breakdown against Alexandre Muller at Wimbledon’s Centre Court. He saved two set points to prevent a two-set deficit, ultimately securing a 6-7(3), 7-6(4), 6-4, 7-5 victory in the second round on Wednesday.
Muller posed a significant challenge, threatening to repeat Medvedev’s past disappointments on the Centre Court grass. Ranked 102nd in the PIF ATP Rankings, Muller took the first set in a tie-break and quickly gained a 3-0 lead in the second. Despite Medvedev recovering the early break, Muller had opportunities to win the set at 5-4 and 6-5.
Medvedev’s baseline consistency and powerful serve were decisive, leading to a three-hour and 28-minute victory in their first Lexus ATP Head2Head meeting. With 14 aces and four breaks from 12 opportunities, he notched his 30th tour-level win of the year.
Advancing to the third round for the fifth time in six attempts at Wimbledon, the 20-time tour-level champion will next face either 32nd seed Zhang Zhizhen or Jan-Lennard Struff. At 28, Medvedev is pursuing his first title of 2024 and his first major since the 2021 US Open.
Alcaraz ease past Vukic into Round 3
Carlos Alcaraz continued his winning run at Wimbledon, notching his ninth consecutive victory on Wednesday. He overcame an initial setback to defeat Australian Aleksandar Vukic in straight sets.
Leading 5-2 in the opening set, the third seed momentarily faltered, falling behind 5-6. Facing pressure, Alcaraz responded by breaking back, pushing the set to a tie-break, which he won, paving the way for a dominant 7-6(5), 6-2, 6-2 win. Alcaraz has reached the third round at Wimbledon for the third year, in a row.
