The Youth Congress and Student Congress staged a surprise protest outside Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi’s residence on Wednesday afternoon.
Armed with drums, tablas, and protest songs, the demonstrators demanded accountability for the recent death of Baleswar student Soumyashree.
While police forces were deployed at Lower PMG to manage a separate BJD protest, the Youth Congress caught security off guard by marching to the CM’s residence without prior notice. Led by Youth Congress President Ranjit Patra, hundreds of party workers sat in a dharna, chanting slogans and demanding the resignation of the Chief Minister and Higher Education Minister.
The protestors alleged that Soumyashree’s death was not a suicide but a “systematic murder,” and called for a judicial inquiry led by a High Court judge. They also demanded the resignation of the Balasore MP and MLA, and insisted that the District Collector and SP be included in the investigation.
Despite the gravity of the allegations, no concrete action has yet been taken by the Chief Minister, prompting Patra to declare, “The CM is asleep—we’ve come to wake him up.”
