The death toll from the collapse of a four-storey building in Virar, Maharashtra’s Palghar district, has risen to 17 after two more bodies were recovered on Thursday. Seven others are undergoing treatment in nearby hospitals, officials confirmed, as rescue operations concluded in the afternoon.
The tragedy struck shortly after midnight on Wednesday when a section of Ramabai Apartment, housing around 50 flats, collapsed during a birthday celebration on the fourth floor. Among the victims were one-year-old Utkarsha Jovil, whose birthday was being celebrated, along with her parents.
Eyewitnesses described scenes of chaos as the building crumbled “like a pack of cards,” trapping residents and guests under debris. Survivors alleged negligence by the builder and authorities, noting that no visible warning signs had preceded the collapse.
Government Response and Arrests
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced a compensation of ₹5 lakh each for the families of the deceased. The Vasai Virar Municipal Corporation confirmed the building was “unauthorised.”
Police arrested builder Nital Sane (47) under culpable homicide charges and violations of planning laws. Authorities have since evacuated nearby tenements as a precaution.
Leaders Mourn Loss
President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep grief. “The collapse is extremely tragic. I pray for the speedy recovery of the injured,” Murmu posted on X. Modi said he was “deeply saddened” and assured all possible assistance.
Municipal Commissioner Manojkumar Suryavanshi admitted unauthorised constructions remain a “serious problem” and pledged stricter action going forward.
Rescue officials noted that recovery efforts were delayed due to the congested locality, which made moving heavy machinery difficult. Displaced families are being provided shelter and relief at Chandansar Samajmandir.
