New Delhi: Olympian wrestlers Vinesh Phogat and Bajrang Punia are set to join the Indian National Congress on Saturday, ahead of the Haryana assembly election.
The development follows their recent meeting with Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on September 4 in New Delhi. The move was widely anticipated after their discussions with the senior political figure, fueling speculation about their entry into politics.
The two high-profile additions are expected to boost Congress’ negotiating power, especially since some Haryana Congress leaders have doubts about teaming up with the AAP.
The two wrestlers reached Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge’s residence in Delhi to join the grand old party.
Phogat also shared a copy of her resignation on X, mentioning that serving Indian Railways has been a memorable and proud time in her life.
“Serving Indian Railways has been a memorable and proud time of my life. At this point in my life, I have decided to separate myself from the railway service and have submitted my resignation to the competent authorities of the Indian Railways. I will always be grateful to the Indian Railway family for this opportunity given to me by the Railways in the service of the nation,” Phogat wrote on X.
