Veteran actress and classical dancer Madhumati passed away at the age of 87, leaving behind a legacy of expressive performances and timeless dance sequences.
Known for her roles in films like Ankhen, Tower House, Shikari, and Mujhe Jeene Do, Madhumati captivated audiences through the 1960s, 70s, and 80s. Her dance style, blending Bharatanatyam, Kathak, Manipuri, and Kathakali, earned her comparisons to Helen for its cinematic brilliance.
Born in Maharashtra in 1938, Madhumati began her film journey in 1957 with an unreleased Marathi film. She went on to feature in numerous Hindi and regional films, becoming a household name in Indian cinema.
At 19, she married fellow dancer Deepak Manohar. Their shared passion for the performing arts shaped her career and later inspired her to establish the Madhumati Dance Academy in Mumbai, where she mentored aspiring artists.
Following her passing, tributes flooded social media. Akshay Kumar, one of her early students, posted a heartfelt message: “My first and forever guru. Everything I know about dance, I learnt at your feet, Madhumati ji. Har ada, har expression mein aapki yaad hamesha saath rahegi. Om Shanti.” Actor Vindu Dara Singh also remembered her as a “teacher and guide” who deeply influenced many lives.
Madhumati’s contribution to Indian cinema and classical dance remains unforgettable. Her legacy continues through the artists she trained and the performances that defined an era.
