From Bhubaneswar to Puri: Utkal Diwas Unites Odisha in Celebration

Odisha came alive today with an explosion of colours, culture, and pride as the state celebrated Utkal Diwas 2025, marking the 89th anniversary of its formation on April 1, 1936.

From the bustling streets of Bhubaneswar to the rural heartlands, the day was a vibrant showcase of Odia identity, resilience, and unity, honouring the legacy of visionaries like Utkal Gourav Madhusudan Das who fought for the state’s linguistic and cultural recognition.

The celebrations kicked off with Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi leading the festivities at Satyabhamapur in Cuttack district, the birthplace of Madhusudan Das. Addressing a massive gathering, Majhi hailed the day as a testament to Odisha’s journey of progress, announcing the launch of ‘Odia Paksha,’ a fortnight-long celebration until April 14 to promote the state’s language, traditions, and heritage. “This is not just a day of remembrance but a celebration of our collective strength and pride,” he said.

In Bhubaneswar, the capital city was decked up with lights, flags, and floral decorations, transforming into a vibrant hub of cultural activities. The iconic Kalinga Stadium hosted a grand event featuring traditional Odissi dance performances, folk music, and a stunning display of Odisha’s handicrafts. School children, dressed in traditional attire, participated in parades, while local artists enthralled audiences with renditions of Odia classics.

Across the state, the festivities were equally spirited. In Puri, devotees at the Jagannath Temple joined in special prayers, blending spirituality with cultural pride. Coastal towns like Gopalpur and Paradip saw boat races and beachside cultural programs, drawing locals and tourists alike. Meanwhile, rural communities organized village fairs, showcasing traditional cuisine like pakhala bhata and chhena poda, alongside folk dances such as Ghumura and Sambalpuri.

The state government’s efforts to elevate Utkal Diwas were evident in the scale of events, with participation from block to state levels.

The President of India, in a post on X, extended warm greetings to the people of Odisha, emphasizing the state’s cultural legacy and its pivotal role in India’s freedom struggle. “It is an occasion to celebrate the rich cultural heritage of Odisha and the remarkable contribution of its people in various fields,” the President stated, noting the hard work of Odia people in preserving traditions while driving progress. The message concluded with a prayer to Mahaprabhu Jagannath, the revered deity of the iconic Jagannath Temple in Puri, for Odisha’s peace and prosperity.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also joined the celebrations, sharing his wishes on X at 03:01 UTC. “Warm wishes on Utkala Dibasa! This day is a fitting tribute to Odisha’s glorious culture. India takes pride in Odisha’s history, literature, and music,” he wrote, highlighting the collaborative efforts of the central and state governments over the past year to advance Odisha’s development.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah echoed similar sentiments at 02:10 UTC, calling Odisha a “jewel in Bharat’s pride” and a state poised to become a growth engine for the nation. “A state endowed with a glorious cultural heritage and immense natural resources, Odisha has always been a jewel in Bharat’s pride,” Shah posted, extending his greetings in both English and Odia.

Social media buzzed with hashtags like #UtkalDiwas and #OdishaPride, as Odias worldwide shared images, videos, and messages celebrating their heritage.

The opposition Biju Janata Dal (BJD), led by Naveen Patnaik, also marked the day with events across all assembly segments, emphasizing unity and the contributions of Odisha’s founding leaders.

Utkal Diwas was celebrated with grandeur and enthusiasm at Raj Bhavan to commemorate the formation of Odisha as a separate state. The event, graced by distinguished dignitaries, scholars, and artists, served as a reflection on Odisha’s rich heritage and its remarkable progress.

In his address, Honourable Governor Dr. Hari Babu Kambhampati emphasized the pivotal role of youth in shaping the state’s future. He highlighted the importance of skill development, entrepreneurship, and digital transformation, urging young minds to contribute to Odisha’s socio-economic development while preserving its cultural identity.

As the sun set, fireworks lit up the skies over Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, and other cities, capping off a day that blended tradition with modernity. Utkal Diwas 2025 was not just a celebration of Odisha’s past but a vibrant affirmation of its thriving present and promising future.
