Veteran tribal leader and Union Minister for Tribal Affairs, Jual Oram, has officially announced that he will no longer contest direct elections, signalling a generational shift in Odisha’s political landscape.
Speaking at a Rozgar Mela in Sambalpur, Oram confirmed that he would not seek re-election to either the Lok Sabha or Vidhan Sabha, reaffirming a stance he had already hinted at during the previous polls.
“I had made it clear during the last elections that I would not contest again. It’s time to make way for the younger generation,” Oram said, highlighting his intent to promote youth leadership within the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Despite stepping away from electoral politics, Oram emphasized his continued commitment to the BJP, stating he remains open to fulfilling party-assigned responsibilities. He also hinted at the possibility of roles such as a Rajya Sabha seat or a gubernatorial post, if the party deems fit.
“I have contested direct elections ten times. If the party insists, I will reconsider. Otherwise, I want to give others a chance,” he said.
A Stalwart’s Journey
Jual Oram, a four-time MP from Sundargarh, was first elected to the Lok Sabha in 1998 and went on to serve in the Union Cabinet under both Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Narendra Modi. His political legacy is deeply rooted in tribal welfare, regional empowerment, and a consistent presence in Odisha’s tribal heartland.
With Oram’s announcement, a significant chapter in Odisha’s tribal political narrative appears to be coming to a close, paving the way for fresh leadership to emerge at both state and national levels.
