Defending champion England delivered yet another dramatic comeback in the UEFA Women’s Euro 2025 semifinal, defeating Italy 2–1 after extra time to secure their place in Sunday’s final at Basel.
England trailed Italy for most of the match following Barbara Bonansea’s first-half strike. Despite dominating possession, the Lionesses struggled to break through Italy’s resolute defence until 19-year-old substitute Michelle Agyemang fired home a stoppage-time equaliser, sending the clash into extra time.
The pivotal moment arrived in the 119th minute when Beth Mead was fouled in the box, earning England a penalty. Chloe Kelly stepped up but saw her shot saved—only to smash in the rebound and seal the victory in stunning fashion.
“It wasn’t supposed to go like that,” said a jubilant Kelly, “but I was ready for the rebound and any opportunity with the England badge.”
The win marks England’s third consecutive major final appearance, following their Euro 2022 triumph and World Cup defeat to Spain last year.
Italy’s dreams of reaching their first final since 1997 were dashed. Head coach Andrea Soncin praised his team’s spirit: “We deserved a different ending, but the girls fought hard. We are proud.”
England will face the winner of the Spain-Germany clash in what promises to be a blockbuster final.
