A sudden cloudburst late Monday night wreaked havoc across Dehradun, submerging homes and infrastructure in Tapovan, Sahastradhara, and the IT Park area.
The Karligaad rivulet overflowed dangerously, leading to the collapse of a key bridge and widespread destruction along its banks.
Two individuals are currently missing, and rescue teams from the NDRF, SDRF, and PWD are working tirelessly with bulldozers to locate them. District Magistrate Savin Bansal and SDM Kumkum Joshi reached the site overnight to oversee relief efforts. All schools in Dehradun have been ordered shut for safety.
Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami assured citizens via social media that he is in constant touch with local authorities and monitoring the situation personally. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah have pledged full support, with the PM stating that the Union government “stands firmly with Uttarakhand in this hour of disaster”.
This is the second cloudburst in Uttarakhand in recent weeks, following a similar incident in Chamoli district in August. The frequency of such extreme weather events has raised concerns about climate resilience and infrastructure preparedness in the Himalayan region.
