The Indian Parliament witnessed a stormy session today after the opposition Congress party submitted an adjournment motion demanding an immediate debate on the recent US decision to impose 25% tariffs on Indian goods.
The move, attributed to former US President Donald Trump’s revived trade strategy, has triggered concerns across India’s political and economic corridors.
Congress MP Manickam Tagore submitted the adjournment motion in the Lok Sabha, demanding an immediate discussion on the issue. “We want a discussion on this because it is going to affect many of the MSMEs and other sectors,” Tagore stated during a press interaction, underlining the potential ramifications for India’s economic and diplomatic standing.
Sources within the Commerce Ministry confirmed that the government is currently studying the implications of Trump’s tariff decision and will take “all steps necessary to secure our national interest.” However, opposition leaders criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for not addressing the Rajya Sabha during the session, sparking further debate on the Centre’s diplomatic preparedness.
Trump’s move comes amid renewed scrutiny of India’s strategic partnerships and defence procurements, particularly from Russia. The tariffs are seen by many as a pressure tactic to recalibrate India’s trade and defence alignment.
Industry experts warn that sectors like textiles, gems & jewellery, and IT services could face immediate disruption. MSMEs, which form the backbone of India’s export economy, may bear the brunt of these punitive measures unless swift counter-strategies are devised.
