US President Donald Trump has issued a fresh warning to Iran amid ongoing unrest in the country, as tensions between Washington and Tehran continue to escalate following sharp exchanges over security threats and leadership criticism.
Speaking in an interview with News Nation, Trump responded to Iran’s warning of an “all-out war,” stating that he had already conveyed a strong message to Tehran and warned of serious consequences if US interests or allies were targeted. His remarks come days after he publicly called for a change in leadership in the Islamic Republic.
Iran, in turn, issued a stern warning on Tuesday, cautioning the United States against taking any action against Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. General Abolfazl Shekarchi, spokesperson for Iran’s armed forces, said any act of aggression would be met with a forceful response, according to international media reports.
The exchange follows Trump’s recent comments in an interview with Politico, in which he criticised Iran’s leadership and accused it of failing to address the country’s internal crisis.
The diplomatic war of words comes against the backdrop of widespread protests in Iran, which began in late December over rising inflation and the sharp decline of the national currency. According to the US-based Human Rights Activists News Agency, at least 4,519 people have been killed during the unrest, while more than 26,300 individuals have been arrested.
Iranian authorities have accused foreign powers, including the United States and Israel, of fuelling the protests. Washington has denied the allegations. The situation remains volatile as international observers closely monitor developments in the region.
