Charlie Kirk, executive director of Turning Point USA and a prominent conservative figure closely aligned with U.S. President Donald Trump, was shot dead during a student-organized outdoor event at Utah Valley University (UVU).
The 31-year-old activist was answering a question about mass shootings when a gunman opened fire from a nearby rooftop, hitting him in the neck. Despite being rushed to Timpanogos Regional Hospital, Kirk succumbed to his injuries a few hours later.
Trump Confirms Death, Blames ‘Radical Left’
Donald Trump confirmed Kirk’s death on Truth Social, calling him a “legendary” figure who connected deeply with America’s youth.
“The Great, and even Legendary, Charlie Kirk, is dead. No one understood or had the Heart of the Youth in the United States of America better than Charlie. He was loved and admired by ALL, especially me… Charlie, we love you!”
In a subsequent video address, Trump accused the “radical left” of inciting hatred against conservatives by labeling them “Nazis and mass murderers.” He vowed that those responsible would face “the severest punishment possible.”
Police Investigation & Suspects
The Utah Department of Public Safety (DPS) confirmed that the attack remains an active investigation.
-
George Zinn was taken into custody but later released, facing only obstruction charges from UVU police.
-
Zachariah Qureshi was also detained, questioned, and released.
Officials stated neither man is currently linked to the shooting. The DPS, FBI, Utah County Attorney’s Office, Sheriff’s Office, and local police are jointly investigating.
Authorities said the gunman likely fired from the roof of a building overlooking the courtyard where about 3,000 people had gathered. Six UVU police officers and Kirk’s private security were present at the event.
Campus Lockdown & Public Safety
The university was immediately evacuated after the shooting and will remain closed for the rest of the week. Classes are cancelled until further notice.
Those on campus were initially instructed to shelter in place until police could escort them to safety. Officials have promised heightened security for future campus events.
