A coal-laden truck lost balance and fell 15 feet below a bridge in Bhawanipatna, leaving the driver and helper critically injured.
The accident occurred at Dhepaguda bridge under Bishwanathpur police limits on State Highway-6, which connects Bhawanipatna to Rayagada. The truck, bearing registration number AP-35-TB-5885, was en route from Visakhapatnam to Bhawanipatna when it lost control on the narrow, unsafe bridge and plunged down.
Locals rushed to the spot and rescued the injured driver and helper. Both were immediately shifted to the hospital for treatment. Their condition remains serious.
Bishwanathpur police reached the site and began ian nvestigation. Authorities are examining the cause of the accident, which once again highlights the dangers of the bridge.
Residents pointed out that accidents occur frequently at this bridge, with at least one mishap reported every week. The safety railing collapsed during the latest crash, exposing the poor maintenance of the structure. Locals alleged that the Public Works Department has only carried out substandard repairs instead of rebuilding the bridge.
Villagers and commuters have demanded immediate construction of a new bridge to prevent further loss of life and injuries. They urged the district administration and state government to intervene and ensure safety on this vital route.
