Police seized a truck loaded with an estimated 5 tons of beef near Putura Chhak in Balasore district on Sunday.
The truck, traveling between Basta and Baliapal under Singla police station in Balasore district, was intercepted after a tip-off about its illegal cargo.
The driver of the truck, attempting to avoid capture, swerved off National Highway No. 60 near Gandhi Chhak and took the Baliapal Road. Dense fog caused the truck to collide with a tree near Putura Chhak, forcing it to stop. The driver and helper fled the scene but were reportedly beaten by Bajrang Dal workers who had attempted to block the truck’s route.
Local police arrived promptly after being notified and seized the vehicle, transporting it to the Singla police station. The incident caused considerable tension in the area, with local residents and Bajrang Dal workers demanding an end to the illegal transportation of cattle and beef to West Bengal.
Residents expressed frustration over the frequent smuggling activities, criticizing police patrols for failing to intercept the contraband. There are calls for stricter measures to restore law and order and prevent further illegal cow movements. Public trust in law enforcement has been undermined, leading to a demand for swift action against those involved in smuggling operations.
