A truck driver from Uttar Pradesh lost his life when his vehicle overturned near Buduni Chhak in Bishamakatak block of Odisha’s Rayagada district on Monday morning.
The truck carried iron materials from Visakhapatnam to Rourkela. The driver lost control in dense fog, and the vehicle skidded off the state highway before overturning.
The heavy load trapped the driver under the truck. Police from Bishamakatak station and Fire Services personnel rushed to the accident site. Rescue teams worked for hours, cutting through iron materials with gas cutters to reach the driver. They eventually recovered the body after a difficult operation.
The accident shocked locals who witnessed the rescue efforts. Authorities confirmed that the truck carried iron materials meant for industrial use. The driver’s identity remains unconfirmed, and police have started an investigation to establish details.
The fog-related accident highlights the dangers of poor visibility on highways. Drivers often face challenges during winter mornings in Odisha, especially in districts like Rayagada, where fog reduces visibility drastically. Police urged caution for heavy vehicle operators transporting goods across fog-prone routes.
The tragic incident adds to the growing concern about road safety in Odisha. Officials emphasised the need for better awareness among drivers about fog-related risks. The accident also underlined the importance of quick response by rescue teams, who worked tirelessly to recover the trapped driver.
The investigation continues, and authorities expect to confirm the driver’s identity soon. The accident in Rayagada stands as a grim reminder of the hazards of driving in dense fog conditions.
