In a significant move, India’s Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has announced a temporary suspension of Television Rating Points (TRPs) for all news channels. The freeze, effective immediately, will last for four weeks.
Officials stated that the decision comes against the backdrop of the ongoing Israel–Iran conflict, which has intensified global concerns and media scrutiny. By halting TRP measurement, the ministry aims to ensure that coverage remains focused on responsible reporting rather than competitive ratings.
Industry experts note that the suspension could impact advertising strategies, as TRPs are a key metric for broadcasters and marketers. While some see this as a necessary step to prioritise journalistic integrity during a sensitive period, others argue that it may disrupt revenue streams and audience engagement.
The ministry has clarified that TRP ratings will resume after the four-week freeze, with regular monitoring and publication continuing thereafter.
