TP Southern Odisha Distribution Limited (TPSODL) has issued 1,229 notices to individuals and establishments for unauthorised constructions under or dangerously close to overhead electricity lines in Southern Odisha.
The initiative spans eight districts, with the highest number of notices served in Ganjam (655), Koraput (160), Malkangiri (131), Gajapati (104), Nabarangpur (83), Rayagada (55), and Boudh (38). These unauthorised structures pose severe risks to both lives and property, while also obstructing routine maintenance and emergency restoration work.
TPSODL is enforcing compliance under the Electricity Act, 2003 and CEA Safety Regulations 2023, which prohibit any building or structure near power lines without prior approval. Violators may face power disconnection and legal action.
CEO Amit Kumar Garg highlighted the importance of strict adherence to safety norms, stating, “The safety of the public and our field teams is our topmost priority. These encroachments are hazardous and against the law. We are committed to enforcing compliance while also educating citizens.”
To spread awareness, TPSODL has rolled out an extensive campaign using village meetings, audio-visual vans, posters, Nukkad Nataks, and door-to-door outreach, primarily targeting rural and semi-urban areas.
TPSODL urges all consumers to obtain prior approval before undertaking any construction near electricity lines. Consumers receiving notices must act promptly, as non-compliance will lead to strict enforcement measures in accordance with the law.
