Top Maoist leader Niranjan Rout alias Nikhil surrendered before the Rayagada Superintendent of Police, along with his wife Rasmita Lenka alias Indu and 13 other cadres.

The surrender marks a significant setback for Maoist activities in southern Odisha. Among the 15 surrendered cadres, seven are women members, highlighting the scale of the group’s decision to renounce violence and join the mainstream.

Nikhil, originally from Jagatsinghpur district, had been a prominent figure in Maoist operations across Odisha. His wife, Indu, also played a key role in organisational activities. Both leaders, along with their associates, formally declared their decision to abandon extremist ideology and expressed faith in democratic processes.

Director General of Police Y.B. Khurania confirmed the surrender during a press briefing in Bhubaneswar. He described the development as a major success in the state’s ongoing efforts to weaken Maoist influence and encourage rehabilitation.

Police officials stated that the surrendered cadres will be provided benefits under the Odisha Government’s Surrender and Rehabilitation Policy, which includes financial assistance, housing, skill development training, and healthcare support.
