Hollywood superstar Tom Cruise received an Honorary Oscar at the 16th Governors Awards on November 16, 2025, in Los Angeles. The award was presented by filmmaker Alejandro G. Iñárritu, who is directing Cruise in an upcoming untitled project scheduled for October 2026.
During his acceptance speech, Cruise reflected on the profound impact of cinema on his life and career. He thanked the thousands of people who work behind the scenes — from artists and writers to technicians — emphasizing that their contributions are essential to filmmaking.
Tom Cruise’s Emotional Speech
“The cinema takes me around the world,” Cruise said. “It helps me appreciate and respect differences. It shows our shared humanity — how alike we are in so many ways. And no matter where we come from, in that theatre, we laugh together, we feel together, we hope together. That is the power of this art form. And that is why it matters. Making films is not what I do, it is who I am.”
Cruise also spoke about his earliest memories of falling in love with movies. He recalled sitting in a dark theatre as a child, watching a single beam of light transform into a world beyond anything he had imagined. “That light opened my imagination to the possibility that life could expand far beyond the boundaries I then perceived,” he said. “I have been chasing that beam ever since.”
