At least three people were killed in a shooting incident in Lake Cargelligo, located in Australia’s New South Wales, on Thursday afternoon, authorities confirmed.
According to the New South Wales Police, emergency services were called to Walker Street near Yelkin Street at around 4:40 pm local time following reports of gunfire. Officers from the Central West Police District responded immediately and established a crime scene.
Police said that two women and one man lost their lives in the attack. A fourth person, a man, was taken to hospital and is reported to be in a serious but stable condition.
Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the shooting are ongoing. Authorities have not yet confirmed whether the suspect has been apprehended.
Public Urged to Stay Indoors
Law enforcement officials urged residents to remain indoors and avoid the area, sending a geo-targeted emergency SMS alert across the town. Local media quoted police as saying all available resources were being deployed due to the seriousness of the situation.
Independent MP for Barwon, Roy Butler, stated on social media that the offender had not been detained, reinforcing police advice for residents to stay inside until further notice.
“This is a terrible and evolving situation. My thoughts are with the victims and their families,” Butler said.
Incident Follows Bondi Beach Mass Shooting
The Lake Cargelligo shooting occurred just over a month after Australia was shaken by a mass shooting at Bondi Beach on December 14, 2025, where a father-son duo killed 15 people during a Jewish festival.
The latest incident also coincided with Australia’s national day of mourning for the Bondi Beach victims. Millions across the country observed a minute’s silence on Thursday evening.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, speaking earlier in the day, described Bondi Beach as a symbol of inclusion and safety, stating that it represents “a place where nothing should break except the waves.”
Authorities continue to investigate the Lake Cargelligo shooting and have assured the public that updates will be shared as more information becomes available.
