A shocking incident unfolded in Mayurbhanj district when villagers caught two men attempting theft and attacked them brutally.
On Tuesday night, two men from Deula village—identified as Bapi Kahla and Kahnu Madhei—entered houses in Jaranata village under Khunta block. They stole two LPG cylinders and tried to escape. Villagers noticed the act and quickly surrounded the duo.
The crowd grew agitated and assaulted the accused mercilessly. Both sustained severe injuries during the attack. Later, Udala police reached the spot after receiving information and rescued the men. Officers rushed them to Udala Medical for treatment.
Despite medical efforts, Bapi Bindhani succumbed to his injuries. Kahnu Madhei remains under treatment. Police registered a case (No. 441/25) and launched an investigation. More than ten villagers allegedly involved in the assault have been detained for questioning.
Authorities confirmed that the probe continues to identify all participants in the violent incident. The tragedy highlights the dangers of mob justice and the urgent need for lawful handling of crime.
