In a significant move, Congress MLAs Tara Prasad Bahinipati and Ramesh Jena were suspended from the Odisha Assembly for seven days.
The suspension was ordered by Speaker Surama Padhy due to alleged disruptive behavior during assembly proceedings. Despite repeated warnings from the Speaker, both MLAs continued to disrupt the session by banging desks and creating chaos.
Earlier, 12 Congress MLAs were suspended, and the recent addition of two more legislators has intensified the political tension. The Congress party has condemned the suspensions, accusing the ruling government of suppressing opposition voices. Heavy security has been deployed around the Assembly to prevent further escalation.
Suspended Congress MLA Mangu Khilla criticized the government, stating, “The Odisha government is murdering democracy.” Congress MP Satpagiri Ulaka also expressed outrage, calling the actions unjust and likening them to a “Gujarat model” of governance.
The political unrest is expected to continue as the Congress party vows to intensify its protests in the coming days.
