Authorities suspended Sub-Collector Tulsi Das Markam on Saturday after a video showed him allegedly watching the obscene dance performance of popular Jatra dancer Nisha Maharana during the Banadurga jatra.
He was seated in the front row below the stage when the performance took place. The suspension followed widespread criticism after the video went viral.
Following the viral footage, the Gariabandh District Collector ordered a detailed probe. Earlier, police arrested 14 event organisers and suspended three police personnel who were also seen enjoying the performance. Officials stressed that strict action will be taken against public servants who neglect their duty or engage in inappropriate behaviour during public events.
The incident occurred on December 9, 2025, when Nisha Maharana performed an obscene item dance during the festival in Banadurga. The video quickly circulated online, prompting immediate intervention by the collector to ensure accountability.
Meanwhile, Nisha Maharana filed for anticipatory bail in the Orissa High Court after a complaint was lodged against her over the performance. She alleged that she performed the obscene dance at the insistence of the event organisers.
