Odisha is bracing for a series of Norwester storms that are expected to bring thunderstorms, gusty winds, and even hailstorms across several districts, according to the latest forecast by the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
An Orange Alert has been issued for Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Sundargarh, Deogarh, Angul, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, and Balasore, where wind speeds are expected to reach 50–60 kmph. Meanwhile, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Khorda, Puri, Nayagarh, Ganjam, and Gajapati are under a Yellow Alert, with predicted wind speeds of 40–50 kmph.
Despite the storms, the heatwave conditions persist, with temperatures ranging between 39–42°C, and some areas exceeding 42°C. The IMD warns that above-normal temperatures and another heatwave spell may return soon.
In response, the state government has rescheduled school and office timings while advising residents to stay hydrated and avoid outdoor activities during peak heat hours. The Kalbaisakhi storms are expected to continue until April 17, before temperatures start rising again.
