In a devastating road mishap on the Joranda-Dhenkanal road near the Kankalunda Satsang Centre in Dhenkanal district’s Gandia police station area, two young men lost their lives on the spot, while another sustained severe injuries.
The incident occurred when a speeding motorcycle carrying three riders lost control and veered into a roadside dhaba.
According to reports, the victims were riding a bike at high speed from Birikhunti towards Joranda. Near the Satsang Centre, the bike lost balance, collided with a parked scooter in front of a shop, and then crashed into the dhaba, resulting in fatalities.
The deceased have been identified as Amar Dehury (38), son of Gairang Dehuri from Birikhunti village, and Sipu Dehury (20), son of Kamakshya Dehury from Mahapada village. The injured rider, Samay Dehury (25), son of Narahari Dehury from Birikhunti village, was found critically wounded at the scene. Eyewitnesses reported that the bodies of the two deceased and the injured person were lying on the road following the crash.
Joranda police rushed to the site and arranged for an ambulance to transport the injured to Dhenkanal District Headquarters Hospital. The bodies were also sent there for postmortem examination. Due to the severity of his injuries, Samay Dehury was later shifted to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack, where his condition remains critical.
Local youth social worker Sunil Nayak, along with his associates, assisted the police in loading the injured and the bodies into the ambulance and ensuring they were transported to the hospital promptly.
Sources indicate that the trio was returning home after watching a cricket match in Joranda. Preliminary investigations suggest that excessive speed caused the riders to lose control, leading the bike to hit a milestone on the roadside before the collision.
Police have registered a case and are probing further details.
