A B.Ed student from Fakir Mohan Autonomous College, Soumyashree Bisi, reportedly died by self-immolation, triggering an outpouring of grief and outrage across Odisha.

Reacting swiftly, Odisha Governor Dr. Hari Babu Kambhampati took to social media, expressing profound sorrow and pledging resolute legal action. “Shattered to learn of the untimely loss of a young student… The law will take its toughest course. Those responsible will face uncompromising punishment,” his tweet read.

Shattered to learn of the untimely loss of a young student from Fakir Mohan Autonomous College. Her passing is not just a tragedy—it is a stark reminder of the urgent need to safeguard our campuses.

The law will take its toughest course. Those responsible will face…

The Governor’s statement has intensified public discourse around campus safety and the psychological pressures faced by students. The deceased, whose identity remains undisclosed, was reportedly under distress, and authorities are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Dr. Kambhampati emphasised that the tragedy underscores the urgent need for reforms in campus environments across the state. His words have resonated with educators, policymakers, and parents alike, many of whom are demanding enhanced welfare systems and accountability measures in academic institutions.

Police officials have initiated inquiry proceedings, and college authorities have assured full cooperation. The Odisha government is also expected to review existing protocols related to mental health support and grievance redressal for students.

As the state grapples with this unsettling loss, the Governor’s message stands as both a tribute and a call to action, urging educational institutions to ensure that campuses remain spaces of safety, growth, and trust.
