Vedanta Aluminium has launched a transformative initiative under its ‘Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene’ (WASH) program, installing solar-powered borewells with cutting-edge purification systems in seven villages across Kalahandi and Rayagada districts.

This project directly benefits over 3,000 residents in Chulbadi, Sunger, Dhamanghati, Dumerpadar, Sagabari, Ladakhaman, and Siadimal by providing reliable access to safe drinking water.

The systems, handed over to local Panchayat Raj Institutions (PRIs) for community management, include 1.5 kW solar units powering 1 HP submersible pumps for deep aquifer extraction. Advanced TSRF™ nanotechnology uses rice husk-based media with nano-silver particles to eliminate microbes, complemented by multi-layer filtration and gravity-based purification. Capable of processing 500 litres per hour, each setup features storage tanks and comes with warranties for long-term reliability.

Rajiv Kumar, CEO of Vedanta Aluminium, emphasised alignment with UN SDG 6: “We’re committed to fostering healthier communities through sustainable water solutions.” Local Sarpanch Gunasingh Majhi praised the initiative for tackling high iron content in groundwater, enhancing health and hygiene ahead of summer.

This effort underscores India’s leading aluminium producer, Vedanta’s role in rural development, promoting resilience and well-being in Odisha’s underserved areas.
