Shubman Gill has adapted to leadership seamlessly, moving beyond constant comparisons with former captains Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma.
Less than two weeks into the England series, Gill has impressed not only with the bat—scoring three centuries in four innings—but also with his astute captaincy. A clear example of his tactical insight emerged late on Day 4 at Birmingham when fast bowler Mohammed Siraj secured a crucial breakthrough by dismissing Zak Crawley for a seven-ball duck in England’s final innings.
A video shared by Star Sports on social media captured the on-field exchange between Gill and Siraj regarding field placements. Siraj insisted on a different setup, but Gill calmly explained his assessment of the pitch conditions, highlighting that this wicket differed from the one in Leeds. He confidently advised Siraj to bowl a normal delivery, predicting that a catch opportunity would arise on the offside.
Shortly thereafter, Siraj delivered a fuller ball that shaped away, enticing Crawley into a drive. The ball flew low off the bat’s open face and was comfortably caught by substitute fielder Sai Sudharsan. Gill celebrated the dismissal with a triumphant expression, reflecting the confidence in his tactical call.
This moment reinforced the belief that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) made the right decision in appointing Gill as Test captain, showcasing his leadership potential both on and off the field.
